Is this a paid internship?
No, participation in the Rhode Island State Police Internship program voluntary and participants will not be paid.
Does the RI State Police require a minimum GPA to participate in the internship program?
No, but it may be taken into consideration.
Can I apply for an internship if I am not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States?
Applicants must be a United States Citizen or have a student visa.
Can I apply for an internship if I do not need academic credit?
Yes, applicants do not need to be receiving academic credit for the internship.
Who should write my letter of referral?
You should select someone who can explain why you would be a good addition to our internship program. It is suggested that an academic advisor should write the letter of referral or someone who is familiar with you as a student.

How soon will I be notified that I’ve been selected for an internship after the interview?
There is no definite time frame. If there is an opening available for an internship, you will be notified via email after your interview of your acceptance into the internship program.
How are assignments decided?
Based on availability within in the barracks or units.
Will you keep my application/resume on file for future opportunities?
No. Each internship session requires an additional application.
How many hours will I be working?
Interns will work between 6 to 12 hours per week between the hours of 8am and 4pm, Monday through Friday. Internship hours must not exceed 12 hours per week.
I am a High School student can I complete an internship?
Internships are ONLY available to college students. The Division may allow you to participate in a job shadow program, if the availability exists.
What attire should I wear?
Attire includes conservative suits, business like dresses or separates, such as skirts, slacks, blouses, sweaters, sweater sets, and jackets. Footwear should be conservative; no sandals or flip-flops are allowed. In addition, no piercings (other than ears), visible tattoos or excessive or outrageous jewelry is to be worn. Hair-styles should be conservative and of a natural color. Always look professional.
Attire includes conservative sport coat worn with dress trousers, business suits, dress shirts, and ties. Wear all-leather belts and dress shoes. In addition, no facial hair, piercings, visible tattoos or excessive or outrageous jewelry is to be worn. Hair should be short and well-groomed and of a natural color. Always look professional.
