The Rhode Island State Police is one of the most prestigious law enforcement agencies in the nation and we provide the highest level of professional law enforcement services available. We hold both National and State law enforcement accreditations. Using a comprehensive education and enforcement plan we promote safety throughout Rhode Island.

While the basic duties of a Trooper include investigating traffic accidents, issuing citations, writing reports and enforcing the laws, our Troopers do so much more. The Rhode Island State Police offers a full range of police services to the residents of Rhode Island. Not only are we responsible for the major highways in Rhode Island, we also patrol and respond to calls within each county. We have many exciting career and promotional opportunities.

Basic Duties

Although many Troopers are assigned to specialized teams or units, the basic duties and responsibilities of every Rhode Island State Trooper include:

  • Enforcing the criminal and motor vehicle laws of the State of Rhode Island
  • Investigating traffic accidents
  • Investigating and completing criminal investigations
  • Providing basic medical attention to ill and injured persons
  • Issuing traffic citations and warnings Interviewing witnesses, victims and suspects
  • Writing field reports
  • Arresting and processing suspects
  • Preparing cases for court and testifying in court

Career Opportunities

Although no candidate is selected for immediate entry into a specialized unit, the Rhode Island State Police offers a wide range of assignments for experienced Troopers. After graduation, field training, and serving at all barracks installations, you may request assignment to one of our specialized units, such as:
